WinterAction Event 2018

An Event Organized by Newcomers for Newcomers

The WinterAction Event 2018 took place on Saurday, Feb 24 at the Ken Cox Community Centre in south Etobicoke.  The goal of the event was to bring newcomers together to introduce them to some winter activities and to help them make new connections to other members of the community and to service providers.  The event was organized by the Toronto Newcomer Council (West) members.  A big thank you goes out to them!

The Toronto Newcomer Council (TNC) is a group of active immigrant community members who work closely with the Toronto Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs) and the Toronto Newcomer Office to identify newcomers’ needs and find ways to support successful immigrant settlement in Toronto.

Twenty service providers had tables at the event to connect newcomers to their resources and programs.  Toronto Fire Services brought a truck so people could learn about fire safety in a fun and engaging way.  An amazing photo booth was constructed by a creative TNC member.  Children and parents alike enjoyed making giant 3D snowflakes.

Councilor Jim Karygiannis , one of Toronto’s Newcomer Advocates, was in attendance.  He and a TNC member told their stories of coming to and settling in Canada.  Two other speakers, the Bruce Trail Conservancy and Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation talked about low-cost winter activities that all can participate in.

The feedback we got from attendees at the event was very positive.  People said they talked to many others in the community and learned about new and helpful resources.  One person wrote on their survey: “It feels good to know there are support groups to help you out.”
